The benefits of smart metering can be explained by looking at differences between normal meter installation and the future installation of metering technology.

Demand response by domestic energy users is not yet a widely used practice, but will be more readily available through the use of smart metering. Smart meters are capable of limiting or even cutting off the energy use when triggered by market developments. The reliability of supply will improve when households and enterprises are able to adapt their energy use during a period of high prices or diminished availability. This will also enhance energy market transactions, energy savings, energy awareness and energy efficiency.

Currently, energy users benefit from the smart meter as they have a direct review of their energy use. By monitoring daily and hourly energy use through applications such as MySource Meter energy consumers will be able to adjust their energy use behaviors, consumption and costs accordingly.
